Hicks Johnson Welcomes Andrew Gould to Lead Appellate Practice Group

Premier trial and appellate boutique Hicks Johnson PLLC is pleased to announce that Andrew Gould has joined the firm as partner and leader of its appellate practice. Gould brings a stellar track record of success as an experienced appellate advocate and will helm the group as it responds to increased client demand for representation on complex appeals.
Across his career, Gould has served as lead counsel in approximately 270 appeals before various federal and state appellate courts, including the United States and Texas Supreme Courts, and has presented over 40 oral arguments, with multiple arguments in the Texas Supreme Court and over 25 before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He joins Hicks Johnson from Arnold & Itkin, a nationally renowned plaintiffs’ firm, where he founded and led the firm’s appellate practice. Prior to that role, Gould served as an award-winning federal appellate prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas and practiced complex commercial litigation at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, D.C.
“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Andrew to the firm,” Hicks Johnson Managing Partner Andy Hicks said. “Our appellate practice has always been known for its excellence handling complex appeals nationwide. Andrew’s leadership will strengthen the practice, reinforcing it as the go-to team for appellate matters in Texas and beyond. His addition will ensure our clients continue to receive best-in-class counsel and advocacy and will support the advancement of our growth strategy.”
Ranked by Chambers and Partners as one of the top appellate lawyers in Texas and praised for his “sterling appellate practice,” Gould is the publisher of 1910 & Beyond, a Substack that explores the evolving landscape of appellate litigation in Houston and beyond. This widely read resource will now be co-published by Gould and the firm, continuing to provide timely analysis of the appellate cases shaping legal and business strategy for Hicks Johnson’s clients.
“Andrew is a highly accomplished appellate practitioner with boundless enthusiasm for the work we do, as evidenced by both his record of success for clients, his Substack, and his involvement in the Federal Bar Association,” said Partner Marc Tabolsky. “We are pleased to leverage Andrew’s skills and experience to benefit our clients.”
Gould is dedicated to service in the legal community in Houston and beyond. He serves as Immediate Past President of the Federal Bar Association’s Southern District of Texas Chapter, as Secretary of the Garland Walker American Inn of Court, and on the Houston Nominating Committee of the Texas Bar Foundation. He is also a Fellow of the Texas, Houston, and Federal Bar Foundations and a member of the Appellate Sections for the Houston Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas. Beyond the legal community, Gould serves on the Board of Trustees for the Houston Symphony.
Gould is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University Law School. He began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Raymond M. Kethledge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Honorable Lee H. Rosenthal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
“I’m thrilled to join Hicks Johnson and to help build on its top-tier reputation for excellence in complex litigation,” said Gould. “Having spent the past few years representing clients on one side of the ‘v.,’ I look forward to bringing that experience to both sides of the docket. Hicks Johnson offers the rare opportunity to combine elite trial and appellate advocacy under one roof. I can’t wait to get started.”
