Dan focuses his practice on complex civil litigation in our Chicago office. He has experience handling a broad range of sophisticated matters for corporations and individuals, including contract disputes, antitrust matters, torts cases, shareholder suits, securities class actions, and cybersecurity and data privacy matters. Dan also has experience assisting corporations with internal investigations and government enforcement matters.
Dan has led matters through all phases of litigation, from pre-complaint negotiations through to trial verdicts and every step in between. Clients value his ability to cut straight to the heart of a dispute, focusing on their goals and developing pragmatic, cost-effective strategies to attain the best resolutions possible.
Prior to joining Hicks Johnson, Dan was an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he practiced general litigation in the firm’s Chicago office. Before law school, he worked for Google.
Dan also maintains an active pro bono practice and has represented clients in civil rights actions, wrongful conviction matters, and immigration cases.
Notable Experience
- Represented a Fortune 500 energy company as plaintiff in a nine-figure contract dispute over defense and indemnity obligations related to offshore decommissioning and environmental liabilities, resolving the matter during jury selection and securing an advantageous settlement.
- Defended individuals in a bench trial, winning a verdict that defeated claims alleging civil fraud, violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and breach of contract, successfully ending the dispute with no finding of liability and $0 in damages owed to the plaintiffs.
- Represented a national maritime logistics company in a two-week arbitration stemming from a failed business relationship, successfully defending against claims seeking ~$40 million and, at the same time, recovering millions in damages.
- Represented a national solar generation company in nine parallel litigations across three jurisdictions and two arbitral forums, all stemming from a post-acquisition shareholder dispute with the founder of the acquired company, ultimately obtaining an advantageous settlement.
- Helped execute an internal investigation for a Fortune 500 company into allegations that international employees violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Antiterrorism Act of 1990. *
- Assisted in representing a Fortune 500 financial institution in successfully obtaining dismissal of a securities class action and parallel shareholder derivative suit. *
- Assisted in advising an international software company regarding its data collection practices, including potential claims for violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and potential violations of website operators’ terms of service. *
- Represented the family of a man who passed away in a personal injury and wrongful death action against the responsible parties whose negligence caused his death.
